Break The Law -Garnet Rogers

I was a farmer in the rocks of Bruce County
I was plowing when the letter came
Some bullshit banker, down in Toronto
Money or the farm it was all the same

This was the land that I bought with my brother
We lost him years ago in Viet Nam
And I believe that he died for freedom
He believed he was the ‘chosen’ man

We had a meeting in the school house in Mildmay
Me and McCluskie and the Dawson boys
They all had farms, they all got letters
It was McCluskie who made all the noise

He said ‘break the law’…there’s nothing you can do…
He said ‘break the law’ when the world lies to you…
Break the law….before the law breaks you.

I heard their words, I was angry,
I was leaning but I had my doubts
Up from the back stood old George McKenzie
He was ninety-five or thereabouts

He said..’There weren’t no lawyers…no Bay Street bankers
Stood beside me with my horse and plough
And I’ll be god damned, or even Irish,
Some sone of a bitch is gonna rob me now !”

He said ‘break the law’…there’s nothing you can do…
He said ‘break the law’ when the world lies to you…
Break the law….before the law breaks you.

Four in the morning…cattle nervous
Ellen’s sleeping, she don’t understand
I’ve got my parka…I’ve got my rifle
Kitchen curtain moves, I see her hand..

The sun is rising, my heart is breaking
I’m in the cab warming up the truck
The door it opens, she’s got her coat on
A cup of coffee… whispered words ‘good luck’

She says ‘break the law’…there’s nothing you can
do…
He said ‘break the law’ when the world lies to you…
Break the law….before the law breaks you.
